The Scottish Ironman: A Challenge for Golfers
Submitted on 2nd February 2012
72 holes of golf in just one day … that’s the Ironman Charity Golf Tournament taking place on 18th June at Deer Park Golf & Country Club, Livingston.
This is a unique challenge for anyone who loves golf: a golf marathon that tests both skill and stamina.

The Ironman is a brand new tournament being brought to Scotland by our Lecturer in Christian Youth Work, Ken Wilson. The tournament gives each golfer not only the opportunity to take part in a unique golfing experience but to raise money for charity at the same time. Each participant raises sponsorship for the tournament with the net proceeds raised being split 50/50 between supporting the training of faith based youth and community workers at ICC and a nominated charity of the golfers choice.
But what makes the training of faith based youth and community workers so important? Ken says, “Recently I heard someone say that ‘the Christian church is only one generation away from its demise’ and by that they meant that if any generation fails to reach the next generation there will be no believing church left. There will be religion for sure, but not a believing church. Therefore it is essential that we reach the rising generation and, because many churches have all but lost any connection with young people, we have to do it well and that means training people for that task.”

The Youth and Community Work department at ICC have been doing just that for the last 10 years and our graduates can be found all over the UK and further afield working within communities offering nurture and bringing about growth.
The Ironman Charity Golf Tournament not only provides a challenge for the golfer, it helps us continue that training of youth and community workers of the future.
