BA / BA (Hons) Youth & Community Work with Applied Theology
The BA (Hons) Youth & Community Work with Applied Theology programme will help you not only think about developing young people and communities, but also to think theologically about wider society. It is carefully tailored to deliver a blend of specialist knowledge and skills training, along with extensive opportunities for putting them into practice.
The programme is made up of a combination of courses drawn from the BA Theology programme and courses focussing specifically on aspects of youth and community work.
Putting it into Practice
Practical experience lies at the heart of the programme. A supervised work experience placement runs for the duration of your studies, and is chosen from a selection of ministry opportunities in churches or with Christian youth and community work agencies. This is supplemented by other short term and residential placements which are designed to broaden your experience in statutory youth or community work, residential, and school settings.
Accommodation and living expenses are provided by most practice locations.
Working Together
The skills and experience your and your fellow students bring with you offer an important opportunity to learn from one another. There are regular opportunities to share experiences, which reinforces the integration of personal, theological and experiential learning.
A Helping Hand
In order to make the connections between classroom and practice, you are assigned a personal tutor who coaches and guides you in all aspects of development. Support in each placement is provided by regular meetings with your tutor, as well as your supervisor, and an experienced youth or community work mentor.
Flexible Training
Although every student who successfully completes the programme will develop a thorough range of core youth and community work skills and knowledge, the programme is designed to allow you to develop particular areas of specialisation in order to prepare you thoroughly for your anticipated area of ministry. Students can select from a range of optional courses including working in schools, adult education, outdoor education, detached work and more.
As well as full-time study, the programme can also be taken in part-time mode making it accessible for youth or community workers already in employment and experienced volunteers. Potential students who have considerable experience in youth and community work may be able to apply for advanced entry to level 2 of the programme.
Academic Validation and Professional Recognition
The programme is validated by the University of Aberdeen, and as such is an internationally recognised qualification.
It is also approved by the Community Learning and Development Standards Council for Scotland which means that those who successfully complete the programme to honours level will be professionally recognised as qualified youth and community workers throughout the UK.

“Nowadays individuals are bombarded with a confusing array of choices, ideas and messages. This means that there is a desperate need for youth and community workers to be guides, philosophers and friends in the midst of this complex world.”
Graeme McMeekin
BA (Hons) Youth & Community Work with Applied Theology Leader
Graduate snapshot:
“In my current ministry I do reflect back to things that I learned in lectures and on placement - the do's and don'ts of successful, Godly youth ministry.”
