Placements

Our goal as a college is that we offer biblical, academically rigorous, spiritual and practical training.  Practical theology, mission studies, youth work and children’s ministry classes all help develop practical skills for ministry, with various cultural groups within the UK and overseas.

However, as well as classroom-based learning, students are involved in actual Christian service through college placements. These are opportunities both to serve and minister, and also to learn through that experience.

This learning comes through asking critical questions, reflecting on what is going on, engaging with problems and issues, and learning from experienced practitioners. Over the years we have built up good relationships with churches and Christian agencies here in Glasgow and overseas.

We take time to discuss your training requirements with you and suggest appropriate situations for your placements. Our setting in a multi-cultural city with many complex urban problems means that there are a wide range of placement opportunities available, to enable students to experience something of the ministry at which they are aiming.

Youth work students spend up to twenty hours a week in work experience, as well as undertaking a shorter placement in the third term of each year in a variety of youth work settings.

Theology students undertake a placement in both at levels 2 & 3.  This works out at 3½ hours each week during the academic year.  In addition there are classroom components to the placement.  In second year, theological reflection, communication and teamwork are emphasised.  In third year, students engage with a variety of leadership skills such as managing change and other professional studies.

It may be possible for students to complete their placement in the summer vacation, over a four week period.  For example, a first year student could undertake the second year placement in advance of entering second year.  This gives students flexibility to undertake a placement overseas.
